Around the World in 40 Days

Starting on May 22, you can take a journey around the world in just 40 days (plus a few extra days) at the Rushville Public Library.
The summer program this year is “Around the World in 40 days.” The journey begins on May 22 and ends on July 8. All you need to participate is a Rushville Public Library card that will act as your passport for this incredible summer experience.

“We have renamed our summer program a ‘summer discovery program’ because participants can do more than read. They can use their imaginations to create and discover,” Library Director Sue Prifogle said.

The summer program is open to all ages from infant to senior citizens, there is something for all ages.
The goal of Around the World in 40 Days is to read or do something creative for the days between May 22 and mid-July.  Participants can decide how they want to spend their 40 days. Most adults will probably just want to read. Children and teens can do combinations of reading, writing a poem or story, drawing, creating something, taking pictures, writing and singing a song or playing an instrument, or just about anything that uses their imaginations. The reading is not limited to books either. Participants may read magazines, newspapers, eBooks, and even online news and articles (not text messages or emails, though).
Participants will receive a “passport” to keep track of what they do each day.
“There may be some days participants cannot read or create and that’s okay,” Director Prifogle said. “There are plenty of days to complete. Children and teens who complete 40 days receive a book to take home and an “Around the World” book bag. Adults who complete may attend a special dinner party.”

In addition to the “Around the World in 40 Days” discovery program, children and teens may participate in a World Scavenger Hunt.

Every few days we will have clues and scavenger items to find on a different world continent. Scavengers can "go" to that continent by looking in books, on the Internet, or on maps for answers. Each continent has its own prizes for those who complete.
The first summer event presented by the Rushville Public Library will be Thursday, June 1, at 1 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club. Larry the Animal Guy from Greencastle, will be bringing several animals from around the world. This FREE event is sponsored by Davis Towing, Breakfast Optimists, Snyder Agency, and Malson Law Office. The Library will present other events throughout the summer including magic shows in Arlington and Milroy, international games and food at the library, an outdoor movie, and a summer-ending cookout and carnival.
